Introducing 'Woodstock Olly Winter' to Chasing Winter

We are so excited to have not only foster failed (within seconds) of our newest furry family member but be able to provide a suitable home for our new puppy, Woodstock.

You may be wondering? What breed is that puppy? What is he crossed with? The simple answer is that he is a Double Dapple Dachshund.

What is a Double Dapple Dachshund?

A Double Dapple Dachshund is the result of two Dapple Parents that have been bred together. This is a big no-no! You should and cannot breed two Dapples together as there is a 25% chance of puppies coming out with serious health issues and defects. Our Woodstock was a lucky one and is only Deaf and partially blind. You may be thinking.. well that seems like a lot, well yes, it is a lot but we are willing and prepared to tackle any health issues our little man may fall upon.

How do you train a Deaf Puppy?

Minus the sharp puppy teeth training a deaf puppy has its challenges and took us a while to remember that he simply cannot hear, anything. Thankfully we have King Kingsley's family with Molly Moo who are helping us through the sign language training process.

We can happily say that Woodstock can now sit, and look, next will be lay down and perfecting not biting people and instead biting toys only with his sharp teeth.

If breeding Double Dapples are a bad thing, how did you end up with one?

Woodstock originally came from NSW from a young breeder who was not aware that both parents carried the Dapple gene. This is why it is so important to ALWAYS get your dog DNA tested before breeding, or leave it to the professionals.

We originally were going to be adopting Woodys Mum, Honey however when arriving at her carers property she made a run for it out of fear and anxiety.

After weeks of no Honey, We saw a video of formally known, Olly on King Kingsley's instagram page (Who originally rescued both Double Dapple Puppies and Honey from the breeder) and fell in-love. (How could you not fall for this cute little face)

Double Dapple Micro Eyes

Along with being Deaf, Woody also has tiny eyes which are formally called Micropthalmia. Micropthalmia is just another health issue that Double Dapples/Merles can have when born, many being totally blind. Luckily for us Woody can see shadows and some things but we are unsure on how much he can see without going to get his eyes tested.

Over the coming weeks we are going to slowly be bringing out more Double Dapple Awareness Blogs but for now over to you
